The Bicho D’agua Institute, an NGO working on Brazil’s Marajo Island, is stunned to have found a gigantic humpback whale in the Brazilian jungle. Not just on the beach, but really in between the trees. The 12-month old calf was found some 15 metres from the ocean.
“We only noticed the whale because of the presence of birds of prey. We saw the vultures circling above the carcass that was somewhat hidden in the jungle,” said Dirlene Silva of government agency Semma. The carcass may have been there for several days.
Scientists investigate why the animal has just landed in that strange place. They take into account that the whale died at sea and was thrown inland by fierce waves.
