Diana and I arrived in China on the night on January 27th, Chinese New Year’s Eve. We changed planes in Beijing to fly to Nanjing and during the first 20 minutes of the flight I was able to watch thousands of fireworks go off in the Beijing metro area. It was beautiful, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Until a few weeks ago I did not know much about Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, so I’m going to share a simple explanation below from research I’ve done online, information from other international students we have met and observations we have seen while in Nanjing. Chinese New Year is the most important holiday for Chinese people, it is a time for families to be together, much like Christmas. Wherever they are, people come home to celebrate the festival with their families.
