Rape Culture: It’s Real, It’s Happening, and It Needs to be Talked About

“When I woke up, there were 33 guys on top of me”

On Saturday, May 21st, a 16-year-old living in Rio de Janeiro woke up in a stranger’s home after being raped by over thirty men. A teenager’s life, in a matter of hours, was stripped from her, and, even more than that, it was posted on the Internet for the world to see.

This happening finally opened Brazil’s eyes to the reality of what is going on in this country. Bloodcurdling statistics soon started traveling across social media platforms, suddenly becoming a dinner conversation for families, and it has me wondering…

Why has it taken us so long to finally start talking about this?
